Assam Flood Recovery & Reconstruction 2026 – Urgent Support Needed
Assam is an impoverished state in the remote Northeastern corner of India. The per capita income is about $5.50/day. It has an estimated population of 36.8 million. 86% of its population is rural. Geographically, to its north are the Assam Himalayas, to its east are the Patkai Ranges and the Naga Hills, and to its south the Barail Range. In between is the Valley of the Brahmaputra River, whose width varies from 2-3 kilometers to 16-20 kilometers in some stretches. The valley that supports the main body of the population of Assam is about 700 kilometers long and between 80-100 kilometers wide. Thirty major rivers cross the Brahmaputra Valley. Due to its geographic location, Assam is prone to severe floods and other geographic disasters every year. 2026 was one of the worst.
In July of 2026, severe flash floods struck Upper Assam, including the districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat. Homes, stored grain, livestock, and small livelihoods were severely damaged or lost. Families who had little to spare now face the cost of starting over. Officially about a hundred people died, but unofficial counts go up to a thousand or more. 500 villages with 170,000 people were submerged for weeks.
In many villages, the water has receded. Recovery is the harder stretch: silt in fields, houses that cannot be lived in, schooling interrupted, and households — especially women-headed families, older persons, and daily-wage earners — that cannot rebuild alone.
Assam Society of America Foundation (ASAF) is raising funds for practical recovery support. Every gift received will be used for flood relief, recovery and reconstruction work in Assam.
