Help Assam Families Rebuild After the Floods

The 2026 floods — and the recovery that follows

The 2026 monsoon arrived with unprecedented force. Relentless heavy rain pushed rivers over their banks, and floodwaters moved quickly through villages in Upper Assam, devastating everything along the way. In districts including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat, tens of thousands of homes were covered to the roof in water, courtyards disappeared, and families had to leave instantly with what they could carry on their hands and backs. Hundreds, if not thousands, perished.

Crops on small plots of land that were the only source of income, meant to feed households for a year and pay debts and survive were lost. Livestock drowned or had to be abandoned. Daily-wage work stopped. Schools closed or became unreachable. For tens of thousands of families, the flood was not a single disastrous night— it was the sudden collapse of the entire systems they depend on.

In many places the water is now retreating. What remains is the slow, expensive work of recovery: mud and silt inside houses, stinking dead animals everywhere, ruined granaries of rice and seeds, ploughs and oxen gone, small shops empty with nothing to sell or buy, children out of class and without clothes, and older or disabled relatives who cannot rebuild on their own.

Assam Society of America Foundation is a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We are raising funds so that practical help — shelter, food, livelihood restart, and school materials — can reach flood-affected families during this critical recovery window, before the winter sets in.

We are collaborating with North-East Affected Area Development Society (NEADS, neadsassam.org), is a volunteers centered grassroots development organization founded in 1985 at Dhekiakhowa Village in Jorhat, Assam, in the north-eastern region of India.

Assam is 23rd among India’s 28 states and union territories in per capita income. The people survive on $6.85 a day on average (2025 data). The individuals affected by these merciless floods barely make it in a good year. Now, they are totally devastated and they need help from those who are more fortunate so that they can face the future again.
